Summer Sports & Foot Injuries: What Parents Should Watch For

Summer means sports, camp, and endless play, but for growing kids, increased activity can lead to foot and ankle injuries. As a pediatric podiatrist, I see these issues peak every summer. While most injuries are treatable, early recognition is crucial in preventing long-term complications. Here’s what parents need to know.

Common Summer Foot Injuries in Kids

Heel Pain Isn’t Just “Growing Pains”

Sever’s disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is the #1 cause of heel pain in active kids ages 8–14. It’s an inflammation of the growth plate, often triggered by activities such as running or jumping sports.

Red Flags:

  • Limping after practice
  • Pain that worsens with activity
  • Avoiding sports due to discomfort

Treatment Tip: Our Mikki Device offloads pressure from the heel, allowing for healing while keeping kids active.

Blisters & Toenail Trauma

Summer heat + friction = blisters and bruised toenails. Poor-fitting cleats or sudden activity spikes are common culprits.

Prevention Tips:

  • Check feet after sports
  • Use moisture-wicking socks
  • Trim nails short

See a specialist if: Toenails become painful/discolored

Ankle Sprains (and Hidden Risks)

Sprains from soccer, basketball, or even poolside slips can mask growth plate fractures.

When to Worry:

  • Swelling/bruising >48 hours
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Recurring pain

Flat Feet or High Arches = Overuse Risk

Poor arch support can strain the feet, ankles, and knees. Custom orthotics can help reduce the risk of injury during high-activity seasons.
