Pools are a summer favorite, and for good reason. They keep kids cool, active, and entertained. But while you’re packing sunscreen and towels, don’t forget to protect something else: your child’s feet.
At Pediatric Foot & Ankle, we see a spike in plantar warts every summer, often linked to public pools, splash pads, and locker rooms. These common but stubborn growths are caused by a virus that thrives in warm, damp environments, the exact places kids love to spend time.
Non-Surgical Options
Plantar warts are small, grainy growths that appear on the bottom of the feet. They’re caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters through tiny cuts or weak spots in the skin.
Signs of plantar warts include:
- Small, rough growth on the sole of the foot
- A black dot in the center (“wart seed“)
- Pain when walking or pressure is applied.
Because the virus is highly contagious, kids often pick it up by walking barefoot on wet surfaces like pool decks or public showers.

Why Are Wet Feet at Higher Risk?
Moisture weakens the skin, making it easier for viruses to break through. Combine that with kids walking barefoot around pools, locker rooms, and splash pads, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for infection.
How Can You Prevent Poolside Warts?
- Wear water shoes or flip-flops. They provide a barrier against virus exposure on damp surfaces.
- Dry feet thoroughly. Pay attention to the toes after swimming or showering.
- Don’t share towels or shoes. Even without visible warts, the virus can spread through shared items.
- Stay watchful. If your child complains about foot pain or you notice unusual spots, schedule a quick checkup.

What If My Child Already Has a Wart?
Don’t worry, warts are common and very treatable. At Pediatric Foot & Ankle, we offer safe, child-friendly treatments that target the virus while minimizing discomfort. Left untreated, however, warts may spread, multiply, or become painful.
